Oh hai, guys!
Vol here yet again. This is gonna be a short update. Okay, so I’ve placed a calendar on the RIGHT side of the page, which will display the update schedule. I plan on doing a general update and whatever else I feel like babbling about on Wednesdays and a review or some gaming history or gaming news on Thursdays. That being said, I will be reviewing Fat Princess today. FUN!
Recently I was introduced to a game called “Fat Princess”, which can only be described as a Real-Time Spazz-Combat game (Anyone who has played it will know exactly what I mean by that) played on the Playstation 3. By Real-Time Spazz-Combat game, I mean that it plays like a battleground from World of Warcraft that’s meant to be a traditional RTS. You have your units(workers, rangers, mages, priests, warriors), which can all be upgraded by gathering resources (wood, stone), and certain defenses that can be built( walls, doors, gates, and catapults). However, this is where the similarities to a traditional RTS end. The point of the (normal) game is to rescue your own princess from the enemy’s castle while preventing them from taking their own princess back. Players can impede the enemy’s progress by feeding the enemy princess cake that can be found anywhere on the battlefield. The more a princess is fed, the fatter she gets, and the fatter a princess is, the harder it is to move her. However, even a fat princess can be rescued if multiple units carry the princess at a time.
The thing is, I can’t see where the game really requires skill. You can easily just button mash the entire game as a warrior and suddenly you’ve won. I’m not going to downplay the story of this game, because for one thing, RTS games don’t really need a comprehensive story (just one compelling enough to keep players interested), and for another the way that Fat Princess is designed and marketed, players of it will definitely be more interested in the action rather than the build-up. As you can see in the screenshot, the game is rather bloody and gory, which the cartoony, cell-shaded graphics tend to hide.
Fat Princess is a guilty pleasure of mine, because I tend to enjoy hardcore, lengthy, committal games, and it’s clearly a casual RTS (not to say that RTS titles are by any means casual, just that Fat Princess is). In fact, I would even say that Fat Princess is an RTS that’s more geared towards old-school Zelda players, and those players will definitely be able to adapt very quickly to its style. Aside from that, it’s a decent game in its own right. Also, considering that it’s a console RTS, the fact that it works and feels spongy compared to the bricks like Halo Wars and Dune makes it highly innovate. The controls aren’t clunky at all, and unit AI is bearable. Overall I’d rate this with 4 Dead Doom Marines.
So, guys, what guilty pleasures do YOU have for gaming? Random ass JRPGs, point and click adventures, whatever it is, leave it in the comment section below! This has been the Vol Log. PEACE, LOVE, AND GANKING! ❤
